Hepatitis Awareness Month – May: Early Detection Saves Lives

Every May, the healthcare community observes Hepatitis Awareness Month—a time dedicated to increasing public knowledge about viral hepatitis, encouraging testing, and promoting access to treatment. At Reza Health, we are proud to stand at the forefront of this effort by offering advanced diagnostic services, specialized treatment, and compassionate care for patients affected by hepatitis and liver-related conditions.

What is Hepatitis and Why Does It Matter?

Hepatitis refers to inflammation of the liver, most caused by viral infections such as Hepatitis A, B, and C. While Hepatitis C is especially dangerous due to its potential to become chronic and silently damage the liver over decades, all forms of viral hepatitis pose serious health risks if left untreated.

According to the CDC, millions of Americans are living with hepatitis—and most don’t know it.

The Reza Health Approach: Comprehensive, Compassionate, Confidential

At Reza Health, liver care is more than just clinical — it’s personal. Our multidisciplinary team, led by Dr. Mohammed Reza, a Mayo Clinic-trained, board-certified infectious disease physician, provides individualized care tailored to each patient’s medical history, lifestyle, and goals. Our three convenient Florida locations in Jacksonville, Jacksonville Beach, and Ormond Beach make access to expert liver care easier than ever.

Why Early Screening is Critical

Hepatitis C is often called a “silent” infection because symptoms may not appear until severe liver damage has occurred. When caught early, however, hepatitis is highly treatable—and often curable.

If you’re over 18, the CDC recommends at least one lifetime hepatitis C test. At-risk groups may need more frequent screening, especially those with a history of:

  • IV drug use (even once)
  • Blood transfusions prior to 1992
  • Unprotected sex or STIs
  • HIV infection
  • Long-term dialysis
