What are STDs?

Sexually transmitted diseases, also called sexually transmitted infections (STIs), are bacterial, viral, or parasitic infections passed from person to person during sex. This includes vaginal, anal, and oral sex.

Common STDs include:

  • Chlamydia
  • Gonorrhea
  • Genital herpes
  • Human papillomavirus (HPV)
  • HIV/AIDS
  • Hepatitis C
  • Syphilis
  • Trichomoniasis

Anyone sexually active is at risk of getting an STD. When left undiagnosed and untreated, STDs can cause long-term health problems, especially in women.

What are the signs and symptoms of STDs?

STD symptoms vary depending on the type of infection you have. Common signs and symptoms of STDs include:

  • Unusual genital discharge
  • Genital pain
  • Genital itching or burning
  • Pain during sex
  • Sores or warts in the genital area
  • Sores in or around the mouth
  • Pain during urination
  • Fever
  • Abdominal pain

However, you can have an STD and not have any symptoms, or you may have mild symptoms that go unnoticed.

When should I get tested for STDs?

If you’re sexually active, you should get tested for STDs. You shouldn’t wait until you have symptoms. When you come in for an STD consultation, Dr. Reza asks about your sexual activity and symptoms, if any, and reviews your medical history.

Based on the information he gathers, Dr. Reza determines what STDs to test for. He may do a blood, urine, or swab test. Dr. Reza explains when you can expect results from your STD testing and the preventive steps you need to take to protect yourself and your sexual partner.

What are some treatments for STDs?

If you test positive for an STD, you need treatment to clear up or manage the infection. Treatment depends on the type of infection you have and may include:

Antibiotics

Antibiotics cure most bacterial and parasitic infections like chlamydia, gonorrhea, and trichomoniasis. You must take your antibiotic as prescribed by Dr. Reza.

You must also abstain from sexual contact during and up to seven days after your treatment to reduce your risk of passing the infection to your sexual partner.

Antiviral medication

Currently, there are no cures for viral STDs like HPV and HIV/AIDS. Dr. Reza prescribes antiviral medications to control these STDs.

Dr. Reza is an HIV specialist and customizes your HIV care to keep your viral load low and reduce your risk of developing HIV-related complications.
